This 4 days long city break destination is Cluj-Napoca, Cluj as the locals call it, an important cultural, political and university center in Romania, situated in the heart of the Transylvania. Our travel package to Cluj-Napoca is not based on guided tours, but on recommendations which include a trip to an underground salt mine, with galleries which date back to the Middle Ages, a free city tour and a trip to an amazing fortress or castle. This travel package is well-suited for couples, families and groups of friends.
You will leave the Billund airport on a Tuesday morning. Time of the flight: from 07:55 to 11:20. The flight back is on a Saturday morning. Time of flight: 06:15 to 07:25. You have 4 full days to enjoy this adventure. This trip is available no matter the season and the direct flight takes around 2:15.

A dynamic and interesting city tour that starts at 18:00. Of course, this tour is free, optional and included in the package price. The duration of the guided tour (in English) is around 2-3 hours and it is centered on the most popular destinations in Cluj-Napoca – loved by locals and tourists. Depending on the day, destinations may include: the central park, the city center (main historic squares), Matthias Corvin statue, St. Michael’s Church, Ethnography museum, Paleontology museum, The National History Museum of Transylvania.
A tested and skilled guide will take you into this 2-hours long guided tour which will highlight the beauty of Cluj-Napoca. We will book the tour in advance, and all you have to do on your first day, is to be present at 6.00 PM in front of the Matthias Corvinus statue, in Unirii square. How to get there? The Unirii square is not far from the hotel. You can get there on foot in less than 30 minutes, if you go east, to Calea Turzii, then turn left, then left again to Strada Republicii. After this, all you have to do is turn right and follow Strada Republicii for 1.5 km and then turn right again on Strada Napoca – the destination will be on the left side. It is a beautiful historical square, so it is hard to miss. 🙂 If you choose to take a cab, the ride takes less than 10 minutes and the price should be around 21 DKK.

Transport details and costs: Turda can be reached from Cluj-Napoca by mini-vans that leave hourly from the corner of Piata Mihai Viteazu and Strada Ion Popescu Voitesti. The cost is around 150 DKK both ways and the trip takes approximately 35 minutes. The shuttle bus from Turda to the mine is approximately 14 DKK each way. The mine is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry allowed at 4 p.m. Admission is approximately 40 DKK per person for adults, 20 per person for children and students, and about 25 for retirees. Also, remember to bring a snack and water for this trip.
Clothing: Remember that is an underground salt mine, so the temperature will always be lower than outside – approximatively 10-12 degrees Celsius. A warm jacket and some sports shoes would be preferable to fully enjoy this trip.
Banffy Palace, the location of the Electric Castle Music Festival, is open from Monday to Sunday, 9:00 – 20:00 and there are daily busses that link Cluj-Napoca to the location of the castle. The busses travel more than twice an hour during weekdays. In order for you to fully enjoy this visit and understand the rich history of the place you can document a little prior to the trip or ask us for a guide/volunteer who is part of the restauration process for this castle.
Clothing: A pair of water resistant walking shoes is recommended for this long visit. If there is a rainy day, the chances that the gardens and hills surrounding the castle get muddy are high. Also, remember to bring a snack and water.
The city of Alba Iulia contains one of the most beautiful fortresses in Transylvania and in the whole Eastern Europe. The busses leave from Cluj-Napoca every hour starting 6:00 in the morning and the trip takes under 2 hours. Also, you can take the bus back to Cluj-Napoca in the evening (from 4:00 PM. to 9:00 PM). Regarding the prices, the transport cost for Alba Iulia is less than 68 DKK per person.
The city of Alba Iulia, Alba County is one of the most important urban centers of Romania, a place of monumental historical significance, associated to the Great Union of 1918 and the coronation of the kings Ferdinand I and Mary, the first monarchs of Greater Romania. Its ancient medieval center, the Alba Carolina fortress (the largest citadel in Romania), encloses between its walls several centuries old attractions laden with history, including Saint Michael’s Cathedral. There is no fee for entering and visiting the fortress, though there will be plenty of places to dine, wine and buy souvenirs and street art.
From May to September, every day at noon, (for Fridays and Saturdays also at 9:00), tourists and locals can witness the “Changing of the Guard” ceremony. You can watch troops from the city’s Austrian Empire’s infantry, cavalry and artillery divisions in their traditional military costumes. Do not worry about Alba Iulia being a small city, there is plenty of history that waits to be discovered. There is the Museum of Union, historical statues and orthodox cathedrals.
You will leave from Billund to Cluj-Napoca on a Tuesday morning (07:55 to 11:20), and then back to Billund on Saturday in the morning (06:00 to 07:25), so you have 4 full days to enjoy this trip. If you have preferences regarding the seats, let us know. You will travel with WizzAir, so you can bring a hand luggage and a supplementary 23 kg luggage for this trip. The cab companies recommended for the short trip from the airport to the hotel are: DIESEL TAXI, NAPOCA TAXI, NOVA TAXI and PRORAPID TAXI and the cost should be between 40 and 48 DKK. You can call us after arriving and we will order a cab for you. Cabs that do not belong to these companies or have no logo on them should be avoided at all costs. Usually they have a higher fee per km. and the trip will cost you much more.
If you choose public transportation, take the bus nr. 5 for 7 stations (until the Pod Someseni station), and then take the 46B bus from the same station where you get of from the first bus. Leave the second bus at Sigma shopping center (after 8 stations) and from that point, you are 5 minutes away (walking distance) from the hotel. This trip costs 7 DKK. You can buy a 2 trips ticket from the airport and use it for both buses.
