Having questions about the prices in Romania? Prices for food, transportation and entrance fees are much lower in Romania than in Western Europe. Here is an article that includes more details regarding the prices – explained in RON/lei and DKK.
Check in, accommodation. You will be presented the beautiful surroundings, the local shops and you will also undergo a short training session on mountain walking and hiking.
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
You will enjoy a quiet evening in the garden with movies, pictures, videos and stories about the gold-diggers/traditional miners who lived in Rosia Montana, the village architecture and evolution, the specific ways of gold extraction from the past and the massive street protests that are linked to the history of the place. We end the evening with stories about life in Rosia Montana today.
When you say Rosia Montana you say gold. Yes, for more than 2,000 years miners have extracted gold from this magnificent land and it still exists today. The second day is the day we tell you the story of the gold.
9:30 to 12:00
A local guide from the Mining Museum will help us descend into massive underground world of the Orlea mountain, into the Roman galleries. He will present old tools and interesting installations used for the extraction of gold (entrance fee is only 10 RON, 16.33 DKK). When exiting the galleries, you will hear legends about the goldsmiths, the church near the museum and the spirits that got lost in the galleries.
The locals enjoy their lunch around 4.00 p.m., but if you prefer an earlier meal, you will have it. All you have to do is tell us in advance. If you’d prefer a light snack, the guide will take you to the local grocery shops.
12:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Although people have extracted thousands of tons of gold from Masivul Carnic, it still holds a rich gold deposit. The area has over 100 km of galleries and we will visit the most beautiful ones. We will then ascend to the protected areas of Piatra Corbului and The Sphinx, two places with an amazing panoramic view. Here we will discuss how and what areas would be affected if a new gold mining operation would start (a famous corporation indends to do this). Downhill, you will see another crucial part in the production of gold – the man-made lakes.
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
You will enjoy lunch in the homes of the locals, with traditional food made by them. The guide will take you every day to a family who prepares traditional, organic, Romanian food (each day for lunch and dinner). Remember that in Rosia Montana people still cook using traditional methods and simple ingredients – so you will fully enjoy the local cuisine experience and flavors. 🙂
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
After the hiking trip, we can relax in the garden and play an interactive board game that is focused on gold mining, traditions and underground galleries. We are in an area that spreads over 100 km of galleries, so no other game would work better. We will become miners, geologists, and gold thieves and we will build galleries, go mining and finally share the treasure. Of course, this activity is optional. If you would rather have a quiet relaxing evening in the garden, just inform the guide in advance.
This day is dedicated to the traditional village, nature and life in this natural area.
9:30 to 12:00
Rosia Montana is the oldest documented settlement in Romania (131 AC), inhabited by people coming from various countries who came here over time to search for gold. They all left their mark on the village. In the historical center you will see protected heritage buildings, schools where teachers have been teaching in different languages, five churches of various religions, goldsmiths houses, ballrooms and casinos. The amazing local architecture will take us back to another era. After the tour, you can enjoy a pre-lunch snack and then we get ready for the next one.
12:00 to 4:30 p.m.
The initial tour will end at the top of the historical center. We will then go hiking to Masivul Lety and Sulei, where we are promised an amazing panoramic view. After this, we’ll enjoy visiting some small villages with a landscape that is specific for Tara Motilor. While visiting, we’ll observe various natural delights such as countless haystacks, grasslands and herds of animals – all this while heading to Masivul Detunata. On a side path, we will carefully climb on top of it.
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Another round of traditional cuisine prepared by the locals.
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
After the intense hiking session, we can take a well deserved break in the meadow nearby. On our way to the meadow, we will stop to take a look at the limestone sculptures near the local dairy farm and find out their history. After this, we will install hammocks and listen to the peaceful sound of the forest. This beautiful meadow is also the location of FanFest, a music festival created to honor and protect the local culture and the environment.
For this day, we propose 2 different guided tracks: one presents the mining activity and history, the other highlights the beautiful nature surrounding Rosia Montana. We recommend you to rent a bike in order to fully enjoy this tours. The two options are:
9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (with lunch at 14:00 at a local traditional restaurant)
We will visit one of the largest mining areas in Europe and hear stories about the subject of deep communist pride, the copper mining career from ‘Rosia Poieni’ and its pond/lake, made over an old village. We’ll see what’s left of this village and then descend near the lake, where we shall have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we will visit the Lupsa monastery, the oldest monastic settlement in the Aries valley (dated 1421 A.C.), founded by the monks of Tara Motilor.
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (no special lunch location included)
We will pass through an area with deep green forests and then we’ll stop at the village’s Greenland. Then, we will descend to the Rosia valley through a pine forest. After this, you will see and get to know the nearby areas with small, traditional villages, cold mountain springs and meadows with raspberries, strawberries or blackberries (depending on the period of the year). We will also reach the Rotundu peak and get to see the weather station near the village, where we will enjoy the 360 degrees panoramic view.
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The farms around Rosia Montana are traditional. You can call them bio, organic or other terms, but truth is they are traditional, following the same principles for centuries. Cows graze on the green fields all day, and in the evening people go to gather the hay/dry grass, milk the cows (always manually), water the gardens, etc. Depending on the time we join the locals, we can take part in these activities or simply watch the locals doing what they know best.
Sadly, this is the end of your trip to Rosia Montana. Check-out can be done only after we take a picture together and we share impressions. 🙂
The accommodation is in the historical center of Rosia Montana, in a newly renovated heritage house. We offer small homes, each having a separate entrance, a kitchenette and a private bathroom. All rooms/apartments are connected by a common yard with a pavilion, hammocks, a picnic area and an amazing panoramic view over the Carnic mountain.
You will leave from Billund to Cluj-Napoca on a Tuesday morning (07:55 to 11:20), and then back to Billund on Saturday in the morning (06:15 to 07:25), so you have 4 full days to enjoy this trip. If you have preferences regarding the seats, let us know. You will travel with WizzAir, so you can bring a hand luggage and a supplementary 23 kg luggage for this trip. Are you used to travelling light or you would rather have a larger luggage? We can fix this, just let us know. After landing to Cluj-Napoca, we will welcome you and provide the transport from Cluj-Napoca to Rosia Montana (by car or minibus, depending on the size of the group). If you would prefer to have a quick snack or go to a nearby restaurant before heading to Rosia, we will take care of that.
The trip from Cluj to Rosia Montana takes around 2 hours. As mentioned before, the flight back is on a Saturday morning. In order to arrive in time for the departure, we will leave Rosia Montana around 3.00 in the morning. The leaving hour is not ideal, but we believe that after such a wonderful experience, you will not mind waking up this early in the day.
The rooms have a kitchenette where you can prepare or store food, and nearby there are three grocery stores. Our recommendation is to have lunch and dinner at the nearby locals or to buy local, traditional and organic products such as milk, cheese, honey, fruit and jams. We do not provide the meals, but we know all the locals who would love to cook for the tourists and we can take you to them for lunch and dinner.
Remember to have breakfast before 09:30 – around this time we start the guided tours. Also, you should always bring water and a snack for the trip.
Not interested in a tour, even if your friends are up for it? You can always:
We recommend you to make sure a raincoat, hiking boots and sun protection are in your luggage before leaving. Also, an easy to wear backpack will be of help on the long hikes.
The hiking sessions are recommended for kids who are 12 years old or older. If you plan on coming with a younger family member, we can adjust the tour to be suitable for them. Same rule applies to all ages. The intensity and length of the guided tours can be changed so that all visitors enjoy this trip. All you have to do is let us know after booking. 🙂
