While tourism in Romania mainly consists of visiting the historical castles, going to the mountains, the Black Sea or through its large forests, the Turda Salt Mine is a hidden gem.
Unlike other salt mines in Eastern Europe, it is organized as a history museum of salt mining and you can treat your allergies and any other lungs conditions while playing table tennis, taking a long walk through its impressive rooms and galleries, taking a trip in the wheel or renting a small boat.
The Turda Salt Mine was dug during the Middle Ages for salt exploitation, but it is now one of the most visited sights in Romania. The mine is perfect for families with children, given the diverse activities, but also for seniors (because of all its health benefits) and for everybody interested in taking an unusual trip underground. The entry fees are under 5 euros and the salt mine is open every day.
A trip to the salt mine can easily be linked to a trip to Cluj, one of Romania’s biggest and most vivid cities. Cluj is an university center and has some of the most interesting museums, churches and historical statues in Romania.
